This morning, as I sat down with my cup of coffee (actually a mocha as I put chocolate soy milk in mine), I realized I had not had any coffee for five days, all the time Leeya was with us. Guess I can function pretty well without caffeine!
We start our mornings on the run, ready to go. Leeya pops right up in bed, each morning, and says, “all done.” She gets out of bed and is rarin’ to go, unlike her mother who was (and still is) a morning grump. I have always been a morning-person, so this appeals to my nature. I’m off and running with Leeya, glad for a new day.
However, there was no time to just sit on these mornings, to sit and read the paper (which I do online) and enjoy a cup of coffee. Leeya would watch Sesame Street that I had downloaded onto my laptop while I fixed her breakfast. She would take a short break from Cookie Monster to eat, while I was cleaning up the kitchen. Afterwards she was ready for water play in the bathroom, running around outside, or painting, all activities that involved supervision by me, and open hands, sans coffee cup, for helping. Then we got dressed (again) and went out on the day’s adventure–to the park, to Nana’s office, to church, and finally, over the hill and through the woods to her house.
This morning, the house is quiet. Our tiny cat has come out of hiding. I’ve got laundry started, and there is time to sit with a cup of coffee, my computer, and the newspaper. Today will be quite different from the previous few, but I have new adventures with my ailing friend to keep me busy. I must also get back to taking care of the duties I have with the nonprofit for whom I am working. But first, there is time for another cup of coffee.

I always make myself an iced mocha every morning. It doesn’t feel right without that bit of caffeine.
