I prefer to focus my creative bursts on photography and/or baking. However, this summer I decided, after reading Diane Salter’s great blog, to give watercolor pencils a try. It has been fun and I have a few pieces that are sort of presentable.
One of my former students was lamenting her lack of creative work in the past few months, so to inspire her, I photographed the pictures you see here, emailed them to her, and said, “I know you can do better.”
Her reply was, “yes, Mrs. Zody, but you’ve done well for someone who doesn’t have any artistic ability.” She remembered the terrible stick figures I would put on the board any time I wanted to demonstrate what I hoped them to do for a project.
I’m hoping she will send some of her work to me soon. I know it will be better. This has been fun, and perhaps next summer I can do some more.

I think you have a good color sense, Delaine. You have a feel for the need for an accent color with other smoother colors. You are also brave for posting your work. Kudos to you!!
Lynn
Thank you, Lynn. Having taught high school students who would mock me on a daily basis, this is easy! I read a blog post somewhere about students who called the teacher (writer of the blog) fat. Well, they tell it like they see it. I always said, if you have a tender ego, don’t go into teaching. Those kids will take you down a notch or two.
those are lovely. I especially like the red flowers
Thank you, you are so kind. They certainly aren’t as pretty as your crochet pieces. The flowers were copied from a card someone sent me that I liked. The others were taken from photographs, mostly taken in New Mexico.
I tend to shy away from pencils, feel they are too restrictive, too tight. That is bad theory driven by weak skills I suppose.
Yes, I too like your colors, they draw you in a peaceful way. Very calming, each composition. Hmm, they could be used in therapy…keep it up.
Thank you for your comments. I love the line about therapy…don’t know if you meant my own or for others, but it’s certainly been therapeutic for me. It’s soothing to apply water to the sketches I make and to watch them change into something different. Guess I’m looking for that to happen with my own life.
Thank you for your comment
. It was a pleasant surprise to see you had stopped by again
. I love the pencil watercolors! Simply lovely. I am definitely not an artist, and also prefer other creative outlets (baking! yay!). I have much admiration for anyone who can create beautiful visual art on paper-ish mediums
.
what a lovely collection, I think you are inspired by colour and simplicity like me.
