The last graduation

We had 5 o’clock graduation this year.  A warm afternoon, sun shining on the asphalt parking lot, as we made our way into the large arena where the ceremony takes place.  We follow our rival, cross-town school, and precede the wealthy school to the north of us.  Seems fitting.

Yesterday’s celebration for the 2010 graduates was one of the best graduations I have attended in my 21 years at this inner city school.  For one thing, these were some of my favorite students.  Really nice kids who did pretty well.  I was glad to be there.  It was also our principal’s last graduation.  Like me, he is retiring at the end of the school year.

Please note, dear Reader, that I am the only one out of step.  Says volumes about me!

As a nod to our Warrior mascot, this year we had a wonderful Aztec dance ceremony befitting of a tribal chief.  This was a new experience, and I sat mesmerized by their performance skill.

It’s been a good year, and this was a perfect ending.  I have some boxes to move, some computers to turn off, and my keys to turn in.  It’s almost over.

Graduation and more

We had the 2 o’clock graduation ceremony yesterday (our district has 6 high school graduations over a two-day period, all in the same location) so we were finished in time to celebrate the retirement of one of our department members afterwards.

But before we could celebrate, we had to do our jobs.  Here I am, pacing the graduates onto the stage to receive their diploma case (the real diploma is given out later):

Here are the gals from my department, the one in the middle is retiring after 36 years at the same school:

Our numbers are dwindling as the retiree will not be replaced by the district.
