I prefer to eat my breakfast at home

The school chaplains get together once a month, for a breakfast meeting at a locally-owned restaurant, where we get the new books and curriculum for the coming month. I’ve never seen the point in eating breakfast at a restaurant unless it is for a meeting. Even then, I want my food to be exceptional if I’m going to pay for it.

Breakfast is so easy to fix at home. Oatmeal, eggs, bacon, hash browns, biscuits, pancakes, french toast. I can make any of these, and in most cases, better than most restaurants. I like to eat out when I’m going to have something to eat that I cannot make at home, or not make very well. I can make breakfast food very well. My biscuits are exceptionally good, but I’m always on the lookout for something better than what I make.

Since I had never eaten at the restaurant where we met today, but had seen a rave review for their biscuits, I decided to order a biscuit for my breakfast. I asked for butter and jam. Turned out, the jam was one of those foil-wrapped Smucker’s packets. Big turn-off right away. I wanted something homemade like one of my own jams or jellies that I spent the summer preserving. I even make strawberry and blackberry syrups for pancakes, waffles or french toast. That’s what I would be having if I was eating breakfast at home.

The biscuit itself was large, but square. Okay, I can handle square. The butter seemed to be real as it came in its own dish, not a foil-wrapped packet. It spread beautifully on the bits of biscuit. The strawberry jelly had no taste at all so I quit using it after the first bite. The biscuit had a good crumb, more like a coffeecake than a biscuit, but that’s okay, too. Not all biscuits are flaky. It takes a special touch to get that flakiness, and a restaurant might not have the time to do it. I mean, if they don’t make their own preserves, working a layer of butter into biscuit dough is probably not going to happen.

Maybe next time I’ll order a waffle. That is one thing I don’t make, but I have a really good Belgium waffle that I buy at Whole Foods. I’d be happy to compare.

  1. I agree breakfast is best served at home.

  2. You’ve spoiled yourself with your good homemade food 🙂

    • I’m very spoiled with coffee. Terry makes the best coffee which I have in the morning at home, but never when eating in a restaurant. If we are dining in a really good place, I will have an espresso after dinner, though.

  3. I prefer breakfast at home as well! I have yet to meet a restaurant that is up to par with the breakfast hubby and I make!

  4. I prefer breakfast at home too. For us its always oatmeal or cereal with bananas, cranberries, dried apricots and mocha for me. Art has tea.
